1 of the robust watches - extremely waterproof: Rolex Deepsea
The compressive strength cannot actually be high enough. Even professional divers can reach a depth of no more than 300 meters, but in addition to the water pressure, there is also the pressure created by movement. In addition, a high pressure resistance makes the watch more robust. Rolex builds with the Deepsea diving watch which, thanks to innovative technology, combines high pressure resistance with a portable case. With a diameter of 44 millimeters and a height of 18 millimeters, the watch can withstand the pressure even at a depth of 3,900 meters. The case consists of three elements: a 5.5 millimeter thick sapphire crystal, a 3.28 millimeter thick case back made of grade 5 titanium and an inner ring made of Biodur 108 steel, on which both rest. These materials deform significantly less under pressure than the case steel, which is why the watch can be flatter. Rolex has been building the second generation since 2018, now with the automatic manufacture caliber 3235, which increases the power reserve to 70 hours without affecting the robustness of the movement. On the contrary: the new escapement is more resistant to magnetic fields. The gradient dial is intended to commemorate James Cameron’s dive into the Mariana Trench in 2012. For 12,100 euros you get a watch that can withstand more than you do yourself.
2 of the robust watches - extremely scratch and shock resistant: Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL
With the Big Pilot’s Watch Shock Absorber XPL, IWC is introducing a completely new type of watch with a patented shock absorber system. The highlight: the movement with dial is held in the case by a specially shaped spring made of Bulk Metallic Glass (BMG) and can withstand shocks of more than 30,000 g. To do this, the crown is completely decoupled from the movement when it is screwed on. This was tested by the Cavendish Laboratory at Cambridge University.
After eight years of research, the watch was the first project of the IWC Experimental Department. In addition to the lightweight titanium cage that holds the movement, IWC was able to further reduce the weight to be braked with the lightweight manufacture caliber 32115 . In this plant, parts are made from an aluminum alloy. The case measures 44 millimeters in diameter and is made of the material Ceratanium, a mixture of titanium and ceramic, which is already known from IWC, which is supposed to be unbreakable like the metal and almost as scratch-resistant as a technical ceramic. The clock is only built 30 times and costs 79,800 euros.

3 of the robust watches - for extreme situations: Breitling Emergency
If you have to make an emergency landing in an uninhabited area or the sailing yacht capsizes, a sturdy watch is no longer of much help. Anyone with a Breitling Emergency carries, but can call for help in this situation and help with the location: The multifunction watch with chronometer-accurate quartz movement has an emergency radio transmitter. In an emergency, the wearer unscrews the safety button at the bottom right of the titanium housing and pulls out the antenna. The micro transmitter then transmits 48 hours on the satellite frequency 406 megahertz and the emergency DF frequency 121.5 megahertz. The watch transmits a unique identifier with which the rescue center can determine who is sending the emergency call and, accordingly, usually also what type of aircraft or ship to look for. A search aircraft can locate the clock from 160 kilometers away. The Emergency has already saved the lives of over 20 people; many jet pilots wear them. The Breitling 76 quartz movement offers numerous functions. With a diameter of 51 millimeters, the watch is very striking, but thanks to the titanium case it weighs only 140 grams. The additional security costs 14,790 euros.
